Virgo New Moon: Tap Into the Healing Power of Loving Touch

Yesterday I treated myself to a massage. I went to one of those cheap Thai places that does a good job, especially for the low cost. And yet, as I was on the table, I could not help but feel that something was missing. I have been blessed to get body work from many people, several of whom are friends. And as the moon wanes to new and we head towards the autumn eclipse season, I was hit by the idea that what was missing was love.

Now, I do believe that most people who do massage, energy work, yoga, etc for a living, have a general intention to offer healing. I am sure some are in it for money or convenience, but most do love what they do and enjoy doing it, most of the time. Still, the power of touch changes drastically when we touch someone with whom we have a personal connection. If that connection is not good, the touch reflects it. But if the connection is loving, that laying on of hands becomes more powerful than anything else.

We have all experienced it: the smell of a parent or partner; the way we can fall into their arms; the ecstatic moment our children curl into us or we see our best friend’s face. I can recall many happy moments spent chatting with my mom as I rubbed her feet or she mine; or as a little girl when my friends and I would sit in a circle and play with each other’s hair. Conscious, loving touch is a force to be reckoned with and sometimes it is the only thing that can pull us back from despair or give us the strength to move forward in a challenging time.

And boy, has it been a challenging time! As I write this, after six long weeks, Venus is moving direct, though her cycle will not be complete for another month. Mercury is preparing for his next journey of psycho-pomp and we are heading into eclipse season, starting with a partial solar one on this new moon in Virgo.

It does not seem as though it is going to be an easy Autumn. The deep soul work we have been asked to do continues, and more is being required on both global and personal levels. Eclipses herald beginnings and endings, and this months’ total lunar eclipse is the final in a set of four that has rocked us for a while. It is hard times for many and we need to dig deep and stay brave.

But how to do that when we are exhausted? Lonely? Angry? Lost? How do we summon the willingness to rise to the next challenge and show up for our lives? I think the answer, as always, is with the moon.

Virgo is mutable earth. She is the dissolution of summer into fall. She is symbolized by the virgin in the old definition, of “one who belongs to herself.” Her qualities are that of the healer and the perfectionist, with all that lies between. Virgo loves to work, to organize, to clean and purify. She invites us to scrub our homes, ourselves and our lives. She is the one with the healing touch, being the energy of “changing the physical.” It can be easy to get caught up in her less fun habits, like nit-picking or having to go through the closet. But for this cycle, I am feeling her as the embodiment of magical, sacred, conscious touch.

My recommendation is this: if you want to bring some salve to your already open wounds, and bolster your spiritual immune system for the season ahead, invoke Virgo and the new moon, through giving and receiving loving touch.

You can offer it to yourself. Maybe make a salt scrub and enjoy the sensation of cleansing your skin. Yoga recommends self massage, heating an oil and rubbing it on, then sitting with it a while before rinsing. You can connect with the earth, through gardening or good old fashioned tree hugging (they really do give some of the best hugs.)

I also think great healing comes from giving to others, so rub your partner or parent’s feet. Massage your child after the bath. Play with your best friend’s hair while you chat or watch a movie. Pet your fur baby. Also, be open to reciprocation. Allow yourself to hug a little longer, hold hands, kiss. You can certainly go a bit further, but sometimes it is just the simplest touch that allows the breath to slow and the exhale to extend. Feel free to get some conscious body work and do yoga, Tai chi or any other modality that brings healing to your body. It is all called for right now, and it is all good.

We truly have the ability to heal through touch. It does not matter if you have been “trained.” If we allow Virgo to awaken within us, she will guide our hands and our hearts. We are animals, we need touch and we need love. Combined, we can create a powerful force that will support us as we take the next step in our evolution.

Sending love for a healing and illuminating cycle,
