Sagittarius Full Moon on Saturday May 21, 2016 at 2:16 pm PST
The Taurus solar cycle is moving to a close, but the lunar cycle is in full swing. Still, with all the retrograded action this month, loving ourselves, even and especially amidst challenges, is the best medicine to stay grounded and present.
Throughout the month of May so far, I have found myself called on all levels to nourish my roots, those parts of me that sustain my body and my life. I have not done it perfectly, but have tried to come back to my daily mantra, self-care and natural practices. I have been engaging in Shamanic journeying, pulling my cards and journaling, as well as taking more baths and anointing myself in healing oils.
As the moon waxes toward full, filling in the sign of expansive Sagittarius, (which will also carry next month’s full moon!) the day after the sun dances into airy Gemini, the day before Gemini’s ruler, Mercury goes direct; it is hard not to start to look up.
Taurus is deep earth, as anchored as you can get.
Sagittarius, with mutable fire as it’s element, inspires our spirits to new heights.
Earth energy is physical energy, fire is spiritual. If we have done the work requested by Mama Taurus this month, we should be ready to allow our spirit to soar high into the skies during this lunation’s golden climax, in hopes that it can settle somewhere between for the month of mercurial Gemini.
There is a basic rule in many philosophies: if you want to rise, you must first root. It is also a law of nature. Any plant, tree, flower, fruit or vegetable first establishes roots in the earth in order to blossom outward. Spring/Summer personifies this dance, as all around us, life is shooting forth.
Without a strong base, we cannot hope to sustain our growth. Earth signs remind us of this. Capricorn, the sign that rules the winter, establishes our foundation. Now in mid-spring, Taurus sweetly encourages us back to our roots, in case we have wandered too far away and been weakened. Later, towards the fall, Virgo will ask us to pull up anything faulty in this connection (completely severing if necessary) and prepare to start anew.
Earth signs ground us. Fire signs elevate us. If we are too bogged down in the dirt, we miss the bigger picture, the reason for the hard work. Sagittarius in particular, loves to restore our faith in magic. Sag is wandering gypsy, the adventurous philosopher. She loves wide open spaces, stories, travel and adventure. Jupiter is her guide and together, they are lucky and fun-loving. Sag’s favorite answer is “yes, and,” which makes her a great team player in the improv of life. Since she will rule the next two full moons, there is clearly something she is here to share, to teach, to transmit. Start listening to her as you raise your eyes to the sky this weekend.
I hope you have been able to heed the nurturing call of Taurus. I hope you are feeling re-connected to source, that your body is healing and restoring in the beauty of spring. And for this full moon, I hope you can now take the time to look up. To look up, get up and grow upward.
Find a reason to laugh, play, dream and imagine. Do something wild, something you have been thinking about but too nervous to try. Trust the earth will hold you to this path and that the full moon fire will elevate your spirit to new levels. We are the bird and the tree. We are the earth and the sky. We root and we rise.
