Aquarius New Moon ~ Monday, February 8 @ 6:40 am Pacific
I am writing this on Imbolc morning (2/2). Imbolc, which translates to “in the belly,” is one of the cross quarter holy days celebrated in earth based traditions. It falls directly between winter solstice and spring equinox and marks both the middle of winter and the first stirrings of spring. Some Gaia lovers believe the cross quarter days are the most powerful of the earth cycle. Imbolc, the quickening of life, directly mirrors Samhain (Halloween) which represents the final breath of life before one cycle ends and the next begins. These two energies dance around each other all year long, clarifying and strengthening the intent of the other.
Imbolc is considered a time of initiation or dedication to one’s path or purpose. It is interesting that it happens at this moment, when most of our side of the earth is cold and barren. It is as though spirit is asking, what is the spark, the life-giving light that can keep you going through another six weeks of winter Another year, even? Perhaps we need this challenge to give us a reason to keep going, to not give up, in the harder winter months.
The Aquarius solar and lunar cycle typically falls somewhere near to Imbolc, and usually, the Aquarius new moon (on 2/8) is considered a “lunar Imbolc,” as well as the Chinese new year (Fire Monkey!). It is a potent moment of intention setting and initiatory practice.
Aquarius is a fixed air sign, symbolized by the water-bearer, which usually makes people think it is a water sign. The quality of fixed air is kind of confusing. It brings to mind heavy fog or hail or something hard to define. And indeed, Aquarius is hard to define. Aquarius follows Capricorn, with it’s Saturnian limitations, methods and materialism and basically blows the carefully laid plans to the floor.
Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the great “Liberator,” and works pretty diligently to keep freedom in the forefront. Uninterested in the mundane desires of a single individual, Aquarius aligns us with the higher mind, the collective consciousness, scribbling out the easy way and asking you to think outside the box. Aquarius practices detachment like an art, holding no expectations and leaving the to the divine will of the universe. Aquarius is concerned with the all, and wants us all to be, too. Uranus, often seen as the “Tower” card in tarot (The theme card for 2016 for the We’Moon collective), is happy to destroy anything not serving our highest good, and usually with the speed of lightning which is one of her planetary symbols.
This new moon, with it’s Imbolc infused power, can be seen as a lightning bolt, as well. Often we cannot see what is really important, what really matters, until we let go of all that does not. In any spiritual tradition I have practiced, I find that the gift of liberation usually comes with letting go, in some form or another. Freedom is only found when we are actually, you know, free…. of the bondage of self, the confines of the ego, the dredges of bad patterns, habits and relationships. Perhaps it’s time for an early spring cleaning or for a fire ceremony. Maybe you need to samurai your friends list on facebook, or even your social media identity, for a while. Only you know where you are holding on and what is holding you back.
To truly embrace the initiation available for your soul’s path and to rise to the level of the Aquarian mind, we need to create space. We need to let go. Only then, can the liberation of our true path set us free and birth us into the real power behind 2016. It certainly is not easy, but what initiation or rite of passage ever is? As we ascend in our spiritual growth, we have to grow up. We live in a culture that is primarily interested in “things,” and growing our bank account, not our soul or our capacity for compassion and love. If that aligns with you, great, but if not, then welcome to the Aquarian age. It’s wake up, let go and let’s go!
Imbolc and Aquarius new moon come once a year. Is this your year to awaken?
Happy Imbolc, Blessed new moon and I hope we can all embrace the energy of the Monkey, the Chinese guide for the year ahead.
