Leo Full Moon: Tues 2/3 3:09pm PST
One of my favorite elements of astrology is exploring the different manifestations of the elements as the wheel of the year goes round. While there are four cardinal elements (earth, fire, water, air) they have multiple qualities and expressions that help to create the power and set the intent of each cycle and season.
Fire is the element of this full moon in Sun-ruled Leo. And like it’s ruler, Leo’s fire is fixed. Aries, the fire sign we will get to play with come spring equinox, feels more like the lighting of a candle: focused, individual, passionate; Sagittarius, the mutable fire bearer, is the bonfire that warms us and inspires us on a cold winter night. Leo, on the other hand, like most stars, maintains a steady glow that lights up the sky and is constant in its affection for shining.
When Leo makes her cameo during the Aquarius cycle, she represents the strength and endurance of love and spirit. Aquarius opens our minds and connects us to the higher consciousness, but her detachment can leave some a little cold. Leo pulls us back into the heart and more specifically, into the belly, the power of the inner fire shining through what we love, what our higher calling is, into the slowly awakening world.
An extra dose of fiery magic this cycle is that Imbolc is the day before the full moon. Imbolc, “in the belly,” also known as Candlemas, is the mid point between winter solstice and spring equinox. It is the middle of winter and yet, it begins to whisper with the first signs of spring including the gently lengthening sun. One of the main deities associated with Imbolc is the Goddess Brigid, who, among other things, was the keeper of the sacred flame. Her flame was kept alive in her temple in Ireland by priestesses, then nuns. It was extinguished at one point but was re-lit in 1993 and has been burning ever since.
This coming together of Leo’s full moon, offering us the full fiery power of the sun reflected in the mid-winter night, and the holy offering of Imbolc, day of the sacred flame, feels powerful and beautiful, and much much needed. There has been a lot of air and water this cycle and the double infusion of fixed fire is the reprieve given by spirit to re-align with our own eternal sun, our spirit, and re-commit to following that passion and purpose towards the spring.
Bathe under this full moon. Imagine her heat filling you, warming, charging, inspiring, igniting and initiating. Initiation is a big piece of Imbolc celebration.
What is your soul’s next step in 2015? What task or goal keeps your inner light bright and alive that you can turn your attention to and awaken?
We are blessed and loved under this full moon. Each of us equally receiving the gift of solar/lunar/inner light. From above and below, within and without.
Om Agniya Namaha (salutations to the fire),
