How Vicki & Jeff Began Making Healing Music
After teaching yoga classes for several years, Vicki finally mustered up the courage to begin singing mantras at the end of her classes. She simply sang a cappella the songs she’d heard Deva Premal sing. Soon, her students were encouraging her to make a CD. Vicki found the idea exciting (and scary) and she wanted to do it, but there was a big problem, she didn’t play an instrument. This was 2006, and Vicki put out a prayer for her musical partner to show up — and he did — almost 6 years later!
From the moment Vicki first sang and played with Jeff Bonilla, the chemistry was obvious and the healing energy was palpable. In their very first rehearsal together, they wrote their first chakra song — Muladara — which is in fact, about the first chakra!
Now, approximately one year later, Vicki and Jeff have written an entire CD of 10 healing songs including one song for each chakra, plus bonus tracks for general healing, abundance and peace. They are currently in the process of producing their music for distribution, and they’re looking forward to playing live at yoga studios, festivals and other spiritually-oriented venues.
The thing that inspired them to create this album (and excites them most about it) is how each song truly reflects the nature of the chakra it represents. In her years as a yoga teacher, Vicki found that all the chakra music she listened to sounded ethereal, despite the fact that the lower chakras — especially the masculine ones (one and three) — are quite physical in their nature. The first chakra, for instance, is about earth, rhythm and grounding and the third chakra is about fire and action — both of which are far from ethereal.
What makes their chakra music really different is that each song truly represents the quality of a given chakra and includes the power of its Sanskrit name. “Muladara” the root chakra song, sounds rhythmic and earthy, “Svaddisthana” the sacral chakra song, sounds sweet and watery, “Manipura” the solar plexus chakra song sounds strong and fiery, and so on.
Their CD “Chakra Love” is expected to be released in the Summer of 2013. Below, you’ll find a sneak preview of “Sahasrara” their 7th Chakra song which lyrically works its way down the chakras. It’s a rough, home recording which we recorded in the kitchen.
