This week, we’re going to strengthen your 3rd chakra (your core) with a few simple yoga poses and a pranayama (breath) exercise.
After years of working with my yoga students and life coach clients, I’ve learned that this chakra tends to be the bug-a-boo. It’s the place where a lot of people – especially women and people who consider themselves “spiritual” – lose their chakra power. And physically speaking the nexus where your solar plexus and heart chakra energy meets (in the bottom of your heart/top of your solar plexus) is the middle of your being. Strong energy here means you are able to bridge the worlds of your upper chakras and lower chakras; of spirit and matter.
I could go on and on right now about why women and “spiritual people” tend to leak core energy, but I’ll save that for another post. To give you a hint, it has to do with how spiritual folks often see the ego as something “bad,” and how women are taught to be “nice” at all costs.
Suffice it to say that your core is your personality center. It’s where the individual you lives. And it’s very, very important. It gives you belief in your value and confidence in your ability to do things. It motivates you and helps you make decisions and act decisively. It gives you a certain charismatic energy. Famous people typically have quite a bit of it.
So how can you get more of it? There are a lot of self-growth tools I could share with you, but for now we are only going to focus on the physical.
It’s all about your core. Fire up your core. Strengthen it. And don’t be afraid to be BOLD.
I’m not going to give everything away here, because I want you to watch the video. In it, I show you how to do “breath of fire” and I give you a few core poses as well as a secret core tip. Check it out by watching the video above.
In the video, though, I didn’t describe the movement of the 3rd chakra as well as I could have. It’s often referred to as “scooping your tailbone.” It’s official name in Anusara yoga (the style I do) is “outer spiral.” The reason it’s called outer spiral is because when you scoop your tailbone – that is move your tailbone down and slightly forward in a thrusting type action – you cause your upper things to rotate outward.
If you’ve been following this series, you may recall that my first post and video emphasized the 1st chakra movement of muscular energy or engaging all your muscles inward. And my 2nd post and video emphasized inner spiral, the action of taking of rotating the tops of your thighs (your groin area) inward, and then pushing them back and widening them apart.
It’s important to keep in mind that all chakra movements in yoga must be done sequentially without releasing the lower ones. A tree needs roots and a trunk in order to grow it’s branches. As it sprouts branches, it never let’s go at a root or trunk level. Its development is cumulative and sequential. We too need to be steadfast in the way we hold each chakra movement as we add the next one.
So, when you scoop your tailbone, you need to make sure that you keep muscular energy, pulling in from your feet to your hips (or just hugging your muscles to the bone making your legs stronger), and also, you need to continue to do inner spiral, rotating your thighs inward and pushing them back and apart.
If you find that when you do outer spiral and “scoop your tailbone” that your pelvis actually pushes forward past your midline, then you have dropped either muscular energy or inner spiral or both. You must keep these strong as you do outer spiral in order to get the core engagement you want.
Play with these poses and movements and ask any questions you have in the comment section below. I’m here to help!
Love and blessings,
P.s. When I created my Chakra Boosters Healing Tattoos™, I designed and manufactured the 3rd chakra tattoo first, so I could wear it on my solar plexus area and get the energy, focus and confidence I needed to finish creating the rest of the tattoos and to get my Chakra Boosters business up and running. As you can see, it worked like a charm. Get 25% off your 3rd chakra (or any chakra) tattoo purchase here in my store when you use this coupon code now: FriendDiscount.
