Why Focusing on Ascension Can De-Stabilize You & What To Do Instead

If you work (or play) in the spiritual community, you’ve undoubtedly heard one word over and over again – ascension. It’s the BIG spiritual goal. Everybody wants to ascend and become enlightened. And there’s nothing wrong with that intention. It’s admirable to want to meditate, pray, do breathe exercises, or attempt to connect with the Divine in any other way. It’s also admirable to want to be as “spiritually evolved” as you can. But at the risk of sounding impudent, I’m here to say that aiming for ascension is not enough. Not any more. We now need to set our intentions on something I call “bicension.”
What is bicension?
It’s a term I created to describe the process of your energy expanding not just upwards (ascension) but also downwards, so that your entire energy field evolves in a balanced, sustainable way.
For millennia, the energy on our fair planet was quite heavy and dense. Up until the last century, everything moved pretty slowly. Relationships and careers were extremely stable – or “stuck” – depending on how you look at it.
Now, change is the order of the day.
The energy on earth has shifted to a higher frequency and seems to be continuing to expand upward. We are now experiencing digital, wifi lives where miraculous transactions take place in the blink of an eye and people change careers, homes and relationships multiple times in their lifetime.
Our collective consciousness is rising so much that we now even have a term for kids who are born into this planet with pre-existing spiritual gifts and evolved awareness. We call them “indigo children.”
It’s a whole new era.
It seems that every other person has ADD or ADHD or some AD-thing of some kind. And anxiety is everywhere. Life is moving at such a lickety-split speed and there are so many options and choices that living day-to-day can feel like a continual multiple choice test with answers ranging from A-to-Z.
So now more than ever, if you intend to ascend and raise your vibration, you also need to cultivate you’re lowest frequencies of grounding and “earthing.” This is what I call the practice of bicension.
To tweak a well-known adage just a bit: What goes up must go down.
Practicing ascension without grounding can lead to real instability. It’s simple physics. Take a building, for example. If you want to construct a building that ascends really high, then you need to design that building with a foundation that descends deeply into the earth.
And the same is true for trees as well. The higher a big redwood grows, the deeper its root system needs to be.
We humans are a lot like buildings and trees. As we expand upward, we also need to root more deeply into the earth, if we want our growth to be sustainable. And most of us really want our growth to be sustainable, because as we vibrate at a higher frequency, we feel a deeper calling to serve the people with whom we share this lovely planet. And to do that, we need to be strong, stable, and reliable.
So if you find you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious, or just generally ungrounded, make sure you balance ascension practices like meditation, yoga or prayer, with grounding practices, like gardening, drumming, walking barefoot or even hugging a tree.
One of the simplest ways to increase your earth energy is to get a root chakra tattoo on your tailbone (like I did) or simply wear my (temporary) Root Chakra Boosters Healing Tattoo™. Since the first chakra relates to the physical world, the root tattoo is the one that people tend to experience the most clearly. Many tell me they feel a warmth around their tailbone or more awareness in the soles of their feet when they wear it.
I have created lots of free grounding-oriented, first chakra videos for you. Here they are as links:

  1. yes, this is exactly what is going on! Through my spiritual work in the past 20 years, I learned pretty quickly that although I definitely felt amazing with my “head in the clouds”…I also needed to remember to simultaneously keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. And that has served me well.
BUT….almost everyone around me is in the OPPOSITE state, with all these people who have basically spent their lives focusing on the material, suddenly feeling deep and powerful energies pushing them upward into the spiritual realm they have mostly forgotten about. Add to that the contrasting pressures of “communicating” ONLY via internet, texting, tweeting…whatever is the “fastest and most convenient”…they are buying into this idea that this crazy-fast technological push is “evolution”. And suddenly finding themselves in this oxymoron of DIS-connect – with others and most importantly, with themselves!
I have to say that since “they” are people connected to me whom I have been trying to educate and help all along (and mostly ignored for the temptations of “things”)…it seems when it comes right down to it, I am somehow held accountable for these “shortcomings”. Like *I* am the one responsible for these ascension energies! Well….I have largely let go of the need to “help” anymore, since they’re not paying me to do it (haha), in favor of just concentrating on my own healing, and just BEING an example to whomever needs it.
Grounding…is just as, if not MORE, important as scrambling to keep up with the Joneses when it comes to the spiritual ascension. After all, we are here to experience Spirit IN our human bodies, and it behooves us to take real good care of the precious realm of our vessels, too. Thank you, Vickie! As always, right “en pointe”! 🙂

  2. Wonderful concept, Vicki – and wonderful advice! I am frequently way up there in the stratosphere (not because I’m virtuous. Just because it’s my nature to live inside my head.) It makes me a little “spacey” and I’m easily overwhelmed. (Hello Vata!) So staying grounded is really important for me. A day of cooking, cleaning, etc. feels very restful and seems to bring me back to a sense of connectedness to the earth. In musical terms — We need both, bass and treble, and all the frequencies in between for a well-balanced and satisfying sound.

  3. Robin, yes, I can totally relate, my Vata Sister. Another good way to ground? Come to Sedona where we have red rocks everywhere! xoxo, Vicki
